About

Hi. I’m Karen.

(Not that kind of Karen. The good kind of Karen. I think. I hope.)

My name is Karen VanHouten, my pronouns are she/her, my alignment is Chaotic Good (usually), and I’m a real person who has spent my entire career working in the tech sector, specifically in the experience design space. At the moment, I’m a consultant using my two decades of experience to help organizations develop holistic digital strategies; this often means building comfort operating in the space between opportunity and risk. I’m passionate about intentionally designed work environments, and I believe inclusion, collaboration, and space for play and experimentation are the most consistent drivers for sustainable success. I swear a lot (I mean, A LOT), especially on Twitter, where I rant about the design and technology industries. I have strong feelings about things.

My Perspective

aka: why should you care.

There are a lot of voices out there, and it can hard to distinguish signal from noise. What you’ll get here is a point of view that takes a design lens and turns it inward onto our community of practice, highlighting humanity over the tools and technology. I make sense of problem spaces through metaphors, and I’m hard wired to identify patterns, particularly behavior patterns. This allows me articulate and frame the challenges we face in unique ways, which has consistently resonated with teammates, clients, and curious audiences. I hope you find it helpful.
